Chesterton's Life

William was born to Lord Adrian and Lady Chimene Chesterton in Capital City on Osiris. Adrian was a prominent litigator, feared by many. William was the eldest of five children, with three younger sisters and then a younger brother. Each of the siblings received the finest that Core education could offer. In addition to that, Lord Adrian sent each of them on a year-long tour prior to college, visiting Border worlds and some of the (carefully selected) rougher parts of the Core worlds, as a way of expanding their views of the Verse.

Following his father's footsteps, William studied law. In his early twenties, his mother suffered through a long illness and then passed away. His father threw himself deeper into work, and William continued his studies. Two years later, in an event that titillated the press, Adrian dropped dead of a heart attack while cross-examining a witness in court. At 26, William inherited his father's title and much of the estate. He took charge of the household and served as custodian for his two youngest siblings until they reached legal adulthood. He also started up his law practice.

During his thirties, Lord Chesterton built up his practice and his reputation as a thoroughly dependable corporate lawyer. His first marriage was to the socialite Lady Isabella Pierce. It was a bad match, and after a year and a half they separated, divorcing another year later. Waiting a while before marrying again, he finally courted and wed Lady Clara Masden, the heiress to a high-end plastics company on Paquin. By all accounts, it was true love. They had one son, Edwin, in 2494.

Two of William's sisters were Alliance officers, both of whom served in the Unification War. The entire family was supportive of the Alliance efforts to quell the "rebellious upstarts on the Rim." Lord William didn't participate actively in the war, keeping his focus on his law practice and family. One of his military sisters came home with honors, and continues to serve in law enforcement. The other military sister didn't come home, and was presumed killed.

After the War, William and Clara devoted more of their time to charitable efforts, especially on Paquin where she was involved in the business which she had since inherited. They kept a vacation home there as well. In 2519, disaster struck. An explosion at the largest Masden Plastics factory led to half of the building collapsing. Three ship crews responded (among them, the Guan-Yin), and saved a hundred and forty people that day. Seventeen died... among them Clara Masden Chesterton, who was last seen re-entering the factory to try and get more people out. Lord William kept up mourning rituals for over a year, and settled into a somber lifestyle after that. He remained surrounded by his household staff and his legal colleagues, but did not court or marry again. Rumors hint that he hasn't even used a companion since that day.

Edwin has followed in the family line and become a successful lawyer.

Donna and the Guan-Yin

William Chesterton first met Donna McKellen when she was 21 years old, caught up in a lot of trouble. He helped her turn her life around, and took her to the Guan-Yin to arrange a job for her on board the ship. Three years later, Donna unexpectedly ended up in charge of the medical ship. She turned to Lord Chesterton for assistance, which he gladly provided. He offered plenty of advice - both personal and legal - and helped with restructuring the hospital's corporate structure, keeping his involvement behind-the-scenes while she ran the ship.

After Count Salin Fawzy defected to the Freedom Movement in 2536, the Alliance seized his assets including the Guan-Yin II. Lord Chesterton and two other nobles immediately leapt to action, to make sure the hospital was taken care of. They made sure a proper investigation was run - without letting it get too bogged down - to clear the ship and crew from any suspicion of being involved in the war. Then they put Chesterton in charge of the Guan-Yin Corporation. He remains to this day as the noble patron and head of the corporation, while the ship keeps on flying.
