Background
Roland was born to Johana and Smith Emmerich on Nov 11 2509. His first half day of his life wasn't terrible, it's the next six months that were the hardship. Roland was born with a birth defect called, Esophageal Atresia with a Tracheoesophageal Fistula. In plain speak his food tube didn't connect to his stomach, and his wind pipe had an extra passage way attached to the food pipe. Dr. Krishnaswami, however, was a very skilled surgeon and was able to correct the condition only leaving 2 small scars on the right side of his body. With the exception of being born with that condition and as a result not being able to eat cool stuff like hot dogs and grapes, Roland lived a normal life on the trash planet of Beylix. His mother and father worked directly for United Reclaimation until Roland was about 5.
Gretchen, his eldest sister, and him weren't the best of friends. In fact they epitomed the very definition of sibling rivelery. The child in the middle, Elise, who was deaf, tried to play peace maker, but very quickly Roland and her developed a bond in tormenting their elder sister. Which was made easier by the fact that the two developed there own set of hand signals that they used. Even to this day they use it to share inside jokes.
Everything was grand in Rolands life several months after his 10th birthday. His father Smith was hired by United Reclaimation for a job stripping an ex-Reaver controlled Trans-U. Unfortunately his father was killed in an accident during this stripping. And that trans-u? Well, let's just say it's still floating out in the black.
At this age a young man lacking in a father figure could go one of two ways, life of misery and ultimately of self-pity or he could turn out all right. With the love of his sisters and mother, they all were able to pull through. Sure Roland had his moments of sulliness, they all did, but they endeared it as a family and pulled through.
So at 10, the whole family had to pitch in to work. Easiest, and most readily available type of work was stripping down the hulks of the various hulls that made it to the surface or just simply sifting through the trash. By the age of 13, his family got to calling him Torch, as he was fast as lightening with a blow torch. It was a life and one day Roland and family was charge with stripping a Harpoon transport class. It's shell in great condition, Roland was able to get her powered back up and operational again, they ate good that month. They tended to eat well when a ship could be fixed rather then stripped.
A year to the day after the first repair job, Gretchen announced her ellopement and became, Mrs. Arthur Beumont and moved to the otherside of the planet to become a farmer. At present time she has two little girls, Ericka and Beatrix, and has is expecting a son by the end of the year.
When Roland turned 15, Elise decided to move to Newhouse to take a teaching at a deaf school recently started up. To this day the two still wave each other almost over everything.
With her kids leaving the nest, Johana started to slip into a slight depression. She'd work, sleep, eat, lather risnse repeat, day in and day at. All that changed very rapidly when Travis Morgan, son of a whore (no proof), swooped in and swept Rolands mother into marriage. This was just after his 18th birthday. Within 6 months Roland had his bag packed and was being ushered out the door and to Persephone we begin his real tale.
