Career & Early Life

Dr Sushmita Khan, PhD, MD, MA, is a scion of the Chattopadhyay dynasty, well-known in medical circles for several members' ground-breaking work in medicine, biochemistry and biology during the first difficult decades of mankind settling on new planets. Her father, Dr Anil Chattopadhyay won several awards and medals for his break-through studies on transpropenylboronic acids that enabled the terraforming of a new moon where earlier settlers had been wiped out by a malignant virus. Her mother Jamila is a well-known ophthalmologist.

Second-eldest of four children, Sushmita always took an eager interest in her parents' work and received the best education money could buy on Ariel. Having learnt enough from her older sister Meena's school work, she was able to skip first grade in school and graduated from high school at only seventeen. Six years of general medical training at St.Anthony's Hospital on Ariel followed before she moved on to St.Jude's Institute for Virology to specialize.

Shortly after moving to St.Jude's she married Dr Sanjay Khan, a respected doctor in the field of stem cell research, eight years her senior. The couple lived in a penthouse overlooking an expensive area of Ariel and often entertained guests or travelled to medical congresses together. To the world they seemed to be the perfect happy career couple, except that they weren't. They were just good at keeping up appearances for a long time until Sushmita finally decided she had had enough. Spotting a job ad for the Guan-Yin II she took the chance to leave Ariel behind and go on extended trips in the name of research.

Leaving the Core

She first divided time between her home on Ariel and her husband, and working for Ugly_Duckling_Corporation and Cody Martin on Silverhold, either aboard the Guan-Yin when she is responding to emergency calls or at the compound.

More recently she's sometimes seen aboard the Praemia as a passenger to travel to new planets in the name of research. She also seems to be running into a certain purplebelly called Officer Sabo surprisingly often and realizes that she's become fond of him... the way one becomes fond of a particularly ugly smelly pet at home that's just become part of the family.

She was invited to take a job leading the Virology department at the Derrial_Book_Memorial_Hospital on Persephone, where she worked closely with Dr Zachary MacAdams for some time and they got romantically involved. But in the end she realized that her home was in the Core with her husband. So she packed up her research and returned to Ariel to fix things with Sanjay and continue her research in the far superior labs of St. Lucy's, where she developed a vaccine for a certain kind of malaria. The childless couple is leading a somewhat happy sedate life now and while Sushmita enjoys the luxury of the Core and being Aunty to an ever-growing gaggle of nieces and nephews, she does sometimes miss travelling around the wilder Border and Rim planets.

OOC Notes

  • Yes, she's a snotty bitch most of the time. I believe there is more RP fun to be had when characters have flaws and weaknesses that generate conflict. Don't mistake her IC attitude for the player's OOC attitude though and feel free to page me, when something bothers you.
  • Whatever medical knowledge I have, comes from watching House. So don't call me on any of the medical stuff Sushmita spouts, I'm mostly winging it with a little wikipedia'ing on the side.
