- 2515 – Ryans begins running for a governorship on Santo. He places underground hits on all identified Browncoats who he believes know about his smuggling operation.
Appearance
Charles Ryans is about average height, slightly portly, not fat but rather a man with the appearance of someone who's never done hard labor in his life, with thinning gray hair. He's someone who looks like he's never done a day's hard labor in his life. His clothes are always expensive and immaculately pressed.
NPC History
Charles Ryans was born into a minor noble family on Santo in 2477. After his basic schooling, he was sent away to attend higher education on Ariel. Specializing in business and bureaucracy, Ryans was ready to take the reigns of his father's successful business.
But upon returning and taking control of the family business, Ryans discovered that legal goods might net a decent profit, but on a border world like Santo, goods of a somewhat less kosher nature would bring in far more money while the risk of direct Alliance involvement still had a chance to remain relatively low.
Ryans began smuggling drugs and guns onto the planet via a small landing pad not far from his personal estate, and found that the life of a smuggler agreed with him. Soon the original business he had taken over decayed into little more than a front organization that looked just feasible enough on paper so as not to arouse suspicion as to the actual source of the money.
Ryans began running slaves not long after. Santo was a busy place with many people coming and going, and the sheer volume of ships passing through afforded him an amount of cover as he brought slaves purchased on rim planets in, arranged for their sale throughout the `verse, and subsequently shipped them off.
Even when the war broke out, business continued on. Santo was hit hard by the fighting, and Ryans' smuggling ships were among the few that encountered little trouble getting on and off planet during the battles. When Alliance supply lines were cut, Ryans began supplying them with weaponry and supplies. After all, it's never too late to try and build up one's reputation. But this turned out to be a mistake of epic proportions. When the Browncoats found out who was supplying the Alliance troops, they sent in a squad to destroy Ryan's landing pad. The first attempt was unsuccessful, but several more attempts were made, ending in the eventual destruction of the pad. During the confusion, documents outlining his smuggling and human trafficking were taken, though Ryans was not able to determine who had actually taken the files.
Over the next years, Ryans spent a significant amount of money tracking down the names of the Browncoats who had attacked his estate. In 2515, when Ryans began building his political campaign to run for a governorship on Santo, he placed bounties on the heads of all the people he suspected might have the hard evidence of his slave ring.
