It dates back to The Earth That Was where certain cultures would arrange marriages for their children at a young age.

Bonding Marriage

What it is

The arrange marriage is a custom held on several of the worlds by standards of the various cultures. On Hera however, Bonding Marriage is a very normal tradition done by many Herian parents to their children. Generally the tradition is done by the more promising and wealthy nobles and Alliance Officers.

Arrangements

Generally the children are chosen at before the age of five years. The parents come to a formal or informal arrangement which includes, but not limit to: articles of jewelery or money to be donated to the daughters family, who will be paying for the wedding (Which includes expenses of food, decorations, tables and chairs), arrangement pf purchase of the first home and who'll pay for the honeymoon.

Marriage

Once the arrangement is finalized, the children only see one another once a year, generally on their birthday until they are 25 years of age. It is then, the family will get together and the wedding will commence.

Cancellations

The Bonding of Marriage is generally final. Once the arrangements are agreed upon, the deal is sealed and cannot generally be broken.

The best known way for it to generally be broken is when the Husband-to-be can no afford the living costs of the marriage and either family is considered by Herian standards as low class citizens (Poor people). Generally this does not happen.
