MUSH Basics

Chapters One is designed for the beginning MUSHer, feel free to skip ahead if you know these commands

Communication Commands

Serenity Mush prides itself on being one of the most role-play intensive games on the Net. Needless to say, not much use in role-playing if you can't talk to the other people on the game. So here's how it works.

Say

The say command allows you to talk to other players in the same room as you are. " is a short-form for say.

Commands Examples

say <text>
"<text>

You type: "Hello, everyone.
You see: You say, "Hello, everyone."
Others see Suzy says, "Hello, everyone."

Pose

When role-playing, it's nice to be able to have your character make gestures as well as statements. The pose command allows you to do that. The pose command can be shortened to :

Commands Examples

pose <text>
:<text>

You type: :takes off his hat and bows with a flourish.
You see: Bob takes off his hat and bows with a flourish.
Others see: Bob takes off his hat and bows with a flourish.

Sometimes you might want to pose without a space following your name, the ; lets you do that.

Commands Examples

pose/nospace <text>
semipose <text>
;<text>

You type: ;'s eyes flash in anger.
You see: Alia's eyes flash in anger.
Others see: Alia's eyes flash in anger.

@emit

This can be good for setting the scene when starting RP

Commands Examples

@emit <text>

You Type: @emit The wind blows up from the south
You See: The wind blows up from the south
Others See: The wind blows up from the south

Page

During the course of the game, you may receive pages and whispers, don't worry, your character isn't hallucinating or hearing things that aren't there. Pages and whispers are a way for players to communicate privately between each other.

Page is a very useful tool for talking to any player on the mush, no matter where they are in-game. You literally don't even have to be on the same world. Generally speaking, pages are considered OOC. They're for helping you hook up with friends, schedule RP sessions, and generally just jabber amongst yourselves.

Sometimes the person you want to talk to is on the MUSH, but not in the same room as you are. The page command lets you talk to someone else no matter where else they are on the MUSH. This is especially useful when you're starting out and you need to ask someone for help.

Commands Examples

page <name>=<text>
p <name>=<text>

You type: page steve=Hi, could you help me with something?
You see: You page Steve, 'Hi, could you help me with something?'
Steve sees: From afar, Mary pages, "Hi, could you help me with something?"
others in the room see: nothing

You can also send multiple pages to different players all at once.

Commands Examples

page <name> <name> <name> <name>= <text>
p <name> <name> <name> <name>= <text>

You type: p Steve Josh Kim= What time does the TP on Pacquin start?
You see: You page, Steve, Josh and Kim, 'What times does the TP on Pacquin start?'
Steve sees: “From afar, Mary pages Josh Kim 'What time does the TP on Pacquin start?'
Josh sees: “From afar, Mary pages Steve, Kim 'What time does the TP on Pacquin start?'
Kim sees: “From afar, Mary pages Steve, Josh 'What time does the TP on Pacquin
others in the room see: nothing

You can also add : and ; to your pages to allow for a little posing.

For example: You type: page sajeev=:waves. "Hi!"
You see: Long distance to Sajeev: Juanita waves, "Hi!"
Sajeev sees: From afar, Juanita waves. "Hi!"
Others see: nothing

Whipser

Whisper is another useful tool, unlike page, it can only be done between players in the same room. Generally speaking, whispers are considered IC and used for two characters in the same room to have private chats.

Commands Examples

Whisper <player>=<message>
W <player>=<message>

You Type: whisper Steve=This guy does realize we're armed, right?
You See: You whisper “This guy does realize we're armed, right?” to Steve
Steve sees: Mary whispers “This guy does realize we're armed right?”
Others See: Nothing

You can also add : and ; to your whispers to allow for a little posing.

For example: You type: w marie=:winks at you when no one's looking.
You see: Marie senses "Olav winks at you when no one's looking."
Marie sees: You sense Olav winks at you when no one's looking.
Others see: nothing

OOC

Another communication command for talking to people in the same room is ooc. And it's exactly as advertised, used for OOC communication between players.

Commands Examples

Ooc <text>

You Type: ooc Gotta go for a minute, phone.
You See: <OOC> Jonah says “Gotta go for a minute, phone.”
Others See: <OOC> Jonah says “Gotta go for a minute, phone.”

@mail & +wave

The @mail command is our version of in game email. It is used for OOC communication between players. It is never to be treated as IC, that is what +wave is for.
The +wave command is Firefly's version of Instant Messenger and email combined. It can be sent either via txt or by video and it can be left as a message or as live 'chat'. ICly, the information is sent by way of the Cortex, therefore, it is subject to be hacked into and read by outside sources.

Commands Examples

@mail

@mail <player name>=<Subject>/<message text here>

Commands Examples

+wave

+wave <player>=<subject>/<message>
+multiwave <people without spaces in name>=<subject>/<message>

Channels

Like other Mushes, Serenity also has several Chat Channels for, well, chatting with the other players. Most are meant to be centered around a specific topic. Some are meant to be used by ship crews or specific organizations. Some are for Admins to help keep track of what's going on in the mush.

To talk on a channel:

Commands Examples

Movement

So now that we've got you talking, let's get you walking. Every area in the mush, be it the bridge of the Red Angel, or the Cargo Offices on Santo, or the busy streets of Persephone's Spacer's District is referred to as a room. As for why, best ask whoever it designed PennMush.

When you log in, the very first thing you'll see after the welcome screens is a description of the room you're in. Down at the bottom of that description, separated from the description, we call 'em descs, just has a nice insider feel to it, by some red lines is a list of all the Exits out of that room.

For example, your first room on the mush:

>Exits<
<CG> CharGen

To use that exit, or any other, you can type out the full name of the exit in question, or just type in the letters inside the brackets, otherwise known as the Exit Alias, if you're in a rush.

<Exit Name>
<Exit Alias>

In this case, typing CG will get you :

You head through the exit labeled <CG> CharGen.
You are entering Character Development Center.

Easy peasy.
