The Past
Helen was born to poor parents on Percephone. At a young age her brothers got her involved in unsavory activities that ultimately led to the stabbing death of her second oldest sibling and the imprisonment of the eldest. She fell in with a bad sort and was introduced to the all consuming bedfellow that is drugs.
She ran away from home shortly after and hoped from transport to transport in an attempt to get away from her past, her addictions, and the emptiness she felt. She wasted most of her youth with a needle in her arm and only got her life together when she hit rock bottom. Sleeping in the street, turning tricks for drugs, and shacking up with just about anyone who batted their eyes at her, she decided that she either needed to clean up her act or go gently into that goodnight.
When she found and tried to save one of her friends from an overdose, she realized how easily that could have been her and sought to make a difference in her life. Going to school, turning things around, even managing to get clean for stretches at a time, she graduated from a relatively prestigious school with a degree in Nursing.
Her demeanor, attitude, and past kept her from seeking employment in the core worlds, however. She ended up working at clinics in the farthest reaches of the 'verse, moving on to the next planet when the addiction came calling and ruined whatever credibility she may have garnered with the people whom she took care of.

Helen can be a bit abrasive on occasion on account of her being highly opinionated and not blessed with an over abundance of filters as to what she says. By and large she genuinely cares for people and will go out of her way to do right by them, even if she makes snide remarks about it while doing so. A lot of her self doubts are hidden behind a wall of humor that is her go to when dealing with situations that would make most people uncomfortable. She's also entirely too open about things that she probably shouldn't be.
