"My experience is that folks comin' to Jiangyin are usually just passin' through, on their way to someplace else."
― Doralee in "Safe"

Jiangyin is a small planet suitable for cattle ranching and foresting and little else. There are small towns all over the world, with no real central government or need for one. The Alliance doesn't even bother to patrol here, leaving folks to go about their business. Those who do visit the planet are usually here to trade with the ranchers and foresters.

It is considered to be one of the most primitive and backward planets. The people of Jiangyin are a simple lot, especially those who live apart from what little civilization there is. These "hill folk" are mostly uneducated, superstitious and desperate enough to steal the things they can't get any other way - including other people. Skilled tradespeople are sometimes kidnapped from the towns and taken to villages in the hills, kept there and forced to provide their services through threats of violence or out of a sense of pity.

Behind The Scenes

Jiangyin's name presumably comes from the city of Jiangyin in China's Jiangsu province. It's on the Yangtze River's south bank, between Nanjing and Shanghai.
