Simon: "Well. Canton really - (breathes in) - really stinks."
Mal: "That's what makes it a great drop point. No one comes here that doesn't have to."
― "Jaynestown"

A man named Higgins was appointed the magistrate of a small moon, which had no name. There are rumors that he won this appointment in a card game. It was originally thought that the moon had no useful resources or potential for agriculture. However, after a few years it was proven that some areas had a mineral-rich clay that could be used to make a ceramic that is ten times stronger than steel and half the weight. This revelation led to a new industry: mud. The town of Canton was founded near the largest mud pits. There are over 2,000 "Mudders" living in Canton and working for the magistrate. Most of the mudders are either slaves or indentured laborers. Higgins rules the planet by use of intimidation and force and nearly everyone hates him. The mudders sing the praises of a man by the name of Jayne Cobb who was able to defy the magistrate and get away, twice. They believe that one day their hero will come and free them from their oppression. However, more likely is that the magistrate's son Fess will be the one to reverse some of his father's harsh policies.
